The Australian Navy's Premier Training Base

This Industry Immersion Experience in an exciting day at the Royal Australian Navy’s premier training base HMAS Cerberus, at Westernport Bay Crib Point Vic.
The purpose of college visits to Cerberus is to engage and inform visitors of Navy's mission, the role of Cerberus as a training facility and member of the community, and provide a view of what sailors do day to day.
On the day visitors will register with base security at 0915- 0930, begin the visit at 0945 and depart Cerberus by 1430.
The following is a typical overview of a college visit to Cerberus. On the day, depending on training requirements and personnel availability, presentations may be interchanged.
All new enlistment sailors (regardless of trade choice) complete eleven weeks of foundation training before progressing to their respective trade schools. Training will include fire fighting and flood control; weapons handling and marksmanship; first aid; military history and ceremonies of the RAN; Work Health and safety and of course how to march.
Tour of Australian Defence Force Physical Training School / Sports and Recreational Facility
This state of the art facility is home to a fully fitted gymnasium, electronic fitness equipment, indoor Olympic heated pool, weights and cross training, squash courts and outdoor confidence courses (high and low ropes, abseiling and obstacle course). Health and fitness, Defence sporting clubs and the RAN swim test are discussed.
Tour of School of Survivability and Ships Safety
Recruits are trained to safely fight all classes of fire, how to use fire fighting equipment, protective suits and breathing apparatus. Recruits are trained in methods of Ships Safety how to shore and control flooding to protect the ship. Demonstration models are used for simulated training to give as close to life-like experience to perform in difficult situations under stress. Visitors may see actual training if programmed.
Lunch at the Junior Sailors Galley (Main Cafeteria)
A hot lunch or salad is provided at nil cost to teachers and students. This gives students an opportunity to experience the facilities and standards all sailors enjoy daily. The main cafeteria prepares approx 800 meals for each meal session. Senior Sailors and Officers dine in their own respective messes.
Tour Seamanship School (Boatswains Faculty)
Seamanship Schools provides Bosun sailors the skills and knowledge to work with ropes, tow vessels, refuel ships at sea, maintain survival equipment, qualifications to drive small boats, and handle all RAN weapons.
Tour of Marine Engineering Demonstration Building
Engineering Faculty is the largest school at Cerberus, where Marine and Electronic Technical sailors are trained in areas of diesel mechanics and maintenance, electrical generators and power distribution, sheet metal fabrication, metal lath skills, welding, refrigeration & air-conditioning systems, reverse osmosis fresh water making and sewage treatment systems. This facility assesses trainees at the end of their training.
Torpedo Training Unit
The torpedo training unit visit gives students the opportunity to view and understand the principles of how torpedos operate and how they are fired from deck based tubes. Weapon system maintenance is one area of responsibility for Electronic Technical sailors.
Small Arms Presentation
Instructors will present a variety of small arms used in the RAN, outlining their capability, specifications and purpose. Students will not handle weapons during this presentation.
Royal Australian Navy Band Melbourne performance
Visits to the band’s concert hall will vary depending on the bands availability. A performance may consist of rock, classical, jazz, big band or military band music repertoire.
